Pypher: Exploring Gopherspace through a terminal-UI browser
If you’re nostalgic for simple, non-interactive, text-only sites or value hobbyist content free of downsides of the modern web, you might want to check out the Gopher protocol. Half the fun in engaging with relatively esoteric protocols is writing your own client.
Here’s my implementation based on the {RFC 1436} spec: {anishsujanani/Pypher}
There is currently no cursor support and I do not intend to build it either. Press u
to focus on the address entry and type away. The way I go about discovering content is by starting at an aggregator (sdf.org, tilde.team, tilde.town, smol.pub
) and then going down rabbit holes. I manually save the addresses of spaces I find interesting. I should probably build a ‘bookmark’ feature into the project.
Though most of what I’ve seen is hobbyist content, it should go without saying, that there is bound to be ‘unpleasant’ content out there, so browse at your own risk.
